It's been a while...
It has been quite a while since I have posted on here so I have decided to catch you all up on exactly what I have been up to with my work and hectic schedule.
It has been a busy few months with my Solo Exhibition at the orchard centre and my January assessment.
The last two months have been very busy and my practice has developed massively.
Last time I made a post about my work, I was very stumped as to which direction to move in with my practice...I had a few ideas bouncing around but I could not seem to concentrate on one.
This was when I decided that it would be best to just crack on with my work and start playing around with the ideas in my head.
My Sketchbook is very important to my work as I believe that the documentation is a fantastic way of ensuring all of my ideas have some form of basis to them. My large sketchbook is where all of my brainstorms are kept, all my ideas, thoughts, progress of my work.
I also look at a fair few artists throughout my sketchbook, one certain artist in particular being of great interest...John Stezaker.
I personally interpreted Stezaker's work to include absence as a possible theme. The way parts of the images are missing and replaced with something else instantly makes me think of a 'lack'. Stezaker's work intrigued me, I found each individual image so powerful yet so simple. Using found images he collaged into them with landscapes or other portraits, the way that the collage hides certain bits of the images creates an instant lack, to me creating an air of absence. What do you see behind the collage? It seems to hide part of the personality, its slightly mysterious. I love his work and I definitely plan on using his work as a main influence in my practice.
Alongside my artist research, I also had a photography workshop that I attended and used to develop my work. I attended the Black and White Chemical Photography workshop, learning how to process negatives and to develop my prints. I absolutely loved attending this workshop as I learnt a lot of skills which I will carry with me for life.
Some of the images which I managed to take (I'd never used a film camera before) came out exactly how I wanted them to. I took a trip to the general cemetery to photograph the epitome of absence - death. In my head, a person being removed from your life or removed from the world is an absence, this is why I believed photographing in the cemetery was the perfect idea.
The image above shows three of the photographs which I took on my black and white film, these were the three which I thought came out the best from my 36 roll. I loved the way the three worked individually and as a group.
I printed each of the images myself in the dark room, the process itself put me out of my comfort zone, I have never done anything like this before so doing it made me feel very distant from my normal practice.
Once I had developed my images, I decided that I wanted them to be the main piece of work for my solo exhibition as I felt very proud of what I had done...

Well...
It has been a while since I posted so I thought it was about time I updated this thing,
I am currently struggling like MAD to find a way to go and a process to use for my practice. Motivation is in dire need so I thought maybe writing a few bits and bobs down here would give me ideas...
and if any of you guys have any ideas that could help me then PLEASE do.
I have been playing around with the idea of ABSENCE...I like the idea of discovering what is missing from an image or an artwork and playing around with the audience.
Im mainly struggling with how to get started with this, do i look at artists...do i just get on with producing work...I REALLY DONT KNOW.
I have bought some canvas boards, paints etc, I have negatives to print and I also have another film to use.
I think its time to pull myself together!!

Photography
Recently I have been playing around with photography, it is something which I have never really attempted before so I am currently trying to improve my skills and make the most of the facilities within University.
In July I photographed my cousin's wedding, I have also been out and about round the peak district photographing natural sculptures as part of my body of work last year.

Fashion Shoot
On a trip to Tuscany a few years ago, part of our course was to design and make a dress which had the theme of the 1920s, using coffee and cream colours. Whilst in Tuscany we had to participate in a photo shoot, it was amazing and here are a few images of the day and my dress in the making...

New to this
As you can probably tell i'm very new to all this blogging stuff, so forgive me if none of this makes sense or it takes a while for me to get things up and running.
Well to start, I am in my second year at Sheffield Hallam studying Contemporary Fine Art. I started my degree straight from A-levels without a foundation course, so as you can probably gather have experienced a massive leap in further education and I can assure you it has been a bit of a struggle. However, I am a very determined person and I feel that such a leap has made me grow not only as a person but as an artist as well. I no longer have a teacher holding my hand, the ONLY person I can rely on is me and the only thing I can do is get on with it.
So, I thought creating one of these wonderful things would keep all of my work archived and also give people a chance to browse and see what they like or dislike and give me some feedback! (I would much appreciate this by the way!!) I'm going to attempt to upload some images of old and new work and explain some of them...
Anyway, I now realise that I am majorly rambling but thanks for reading if you actually got this far and take a look at my work below and see what you think.
Wire Work - During my A-levels I was encouraged to try and use as many materials as possible, experimenting in different ways. Over the last few years I have worked with wire, sticks, tissue paper and paint creating a series of different objects and works. The image below was part of my voodoo project, I created a few wire structures of my own individual idea of 'voodoo dolls'.
As well as wire structures, I have experimented with paint. I love painting and have made a lot of paintings over the past few years, the paintings on this blog are a selection of my strongest and not so strong pieces.
Below are a few more images of work that I have done, including my photography which I am currently starting to develop and role plays, textiles work and modelling.
Role Play - I created a character (a clown) and documented it through photography and extended through to making models and boards etc.
Drawing - Here are a selection of observational drawings.
So, I think i've plied you with enough work for now...i'll blog again soon.
Laura.
